One cannot talk about the history of the Great Smoky Mountains without discussing the historical log homes and log cabins that were scattered across the great landscape that is now a national park. Famous Log Cabins such as John Oliver, Henry Whitehead, Carter Shields, John Ownby, Jim Bales, and Noah “Bud” Ogle are still visible and visited by hundreds each day. In fact, Noah "Bud" Ogle didn't let a land assessor's comment get in the way of making a living. He and his wife, Cindy, started out on a 400 acre farm in 1879 in the White Oak Flats community (now Gatlinburg) despite the assessor's belief that the land was "not fit for farming."
They lived temporarily in an older one-room cabin while they raised the lower half of the new house that now stands. As the family grew in number, a second section was added to create a traditional saddlebag cabin configuration.
Today, log cabins can be built to suit your everyday living need because personal property and land is becoming more and more accessible. The Smoky Mountains is no longer just a place to visit; it is fast becoming a builder’s paradise! New Property and real estate is ever increasing due to the fact that farming is no longer the #1 means of income. So, consequently families are “Selling the Farm!” Dream of your new real estate in the mountains next door to the most visited national park in the country. An interesting concept that is infectious today is to build a luxurious log cabin and place it on a rental program. This approach allows you to invest in property cover most if not all of the monthly cost. After a few years, the cabin can be listed with a real estat agent and sold for a handsome profit.
Like in the 1800’s, the process of building a cabin begins with the selection of the building site. The site may be in a level valley with woodland views or high atop a mountain with spectacular views. Decision now would be to know what style, or type of cabin, you would want to build or purchase from a real estate agent in the Smoky Mountains. Today, log cabins and log homes are built with all the modern conveniences of home. Families are coming to the mountains of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville, Tennessee because of the schools, community, and friendliness. But even more importantly, they are coming to build their dream home in the most picturesque sections of the country.
There are a variety of ways you can approach building or purchasing your cabin. Some people have the log shell assembled and they do the remainder, from staining the logs to the kitchen finishes; or you may choose a real estate agent to help you select a professional cabin builder. Whatever you may choose to reflect on, it is worth the time and effort. So, what are you waiting for? When considering your next real estate purchase, consider Marty Loveday and Associates.
